I then opened both files and zoomed in on an area to compare the sharpness and detail of the images. I did a test scan at 4800dpi for both VueScan and ScanGear using default settings and outputing to a TIFF file. So enough background, here is my question. That is the main reason why I was interested in VueScan (and possibly Silverfast). One HUGE limitation is that it doensn't allow multi-scan functions to increase dynamic range. It's pretty easy to figure out and allows you to do most of the basic manipulations for scanning film. So far I've only used the "ScanGear" software that came with the scanner.

I am currently digitizing a couple of hundred slides I took from a Tahiti trip back in 1989 (using Fujichrome film if I remember correctly) so the slides are about 24 years old. I recently obtained a Canoscan 9000F mkII scanner and am experimenting with third party software in an effort to get the best scans from it that I can.
